My Black Ops disc is unreadable to a certain piont and i cant afford a new copy (would the following work))?

i have an xbox 360 and my disc can read all the menus but when it comes to loading multiplayer maps and zombie maps ect...... it wont load. ok here is my scenario if i l lent a perfectly good working copy of black ops from someone and installed it onto my hard drive and then tried to boot it up off my damaged disc? would this work?
