What is refractory period of a neuron?

The refractory period is the time immediately after and action potential (depolarization followed by hyperpolarization). During this time, the neuron is preparing itself for another action potential, but its not ready yet, so even if a stimulus arrives, it can't depolarize yet. The correct ion gradients have to be re-established first.
