Is my friend sociopathic or just putting on a show?

my friend of 5 years has changed so much in the last 2 years. he used to be the sweetest thing. he was kinda nerdy (anime freak, etc.) and was never mr. popular. he also kinda had a screwed up life growing up with a junkie/alcoholic mom, abusive dad, being under dhs custody, etc. anyway, 2 years ago, he met some idiot that was a bounty hunter and got him into it and the next thing i know he starts talking about being heartless, thinking 9/11 was funny, doing and saying hurtful things with no remorse, saying people should die cuz the world is overpopulated, laughing when a tragedy happens, being racist, rude, and saying he is going to die when he turns 24. he joined the marines last year cuz he wanted to kill people and ended up trying to kill himself in basic training to get out of the military cuz he couldn't handle it. it just keeps getting worse and worse. he didn't start acting like this until he met that bounty hunter. is he really sociopathic or just putting on a show?
