Info. on Charles V (why did he oppose Martin Luther, etc.)?

Charles V was the Holy Roman Emporer. He literally held a position that was sanctioned by the Pope to protect Christianity. There was no other role he could have played. Most of what the church did during the first years of Luther was inaction, though, because there were too many problems in Rome for the church to take really proactive roles.
