Grammar in schools: Your thoughts?

My school did it the same way - fortunately for me, because I failed every grammar test I ever took. Not because I can't write or recognize a grammatically-correct sentence, but because I could never remember the difference between participles and adverbs and all that crap. You don't need to know the details to use it. Actually, it only came in useful when I started studying foreign languages.
